Sales Tax Deferrals Will Impact Essential City Services

Sacramento – The League of California Cities appreciates the tremendous leadership shown by Gov. Gavin Newsom, state officials, and all the local leaders on the front lines as we navigate together through this public health crisis. The significant health, economic, and budgetary impacts from the pandemic will continue for some time.

“While the Governor’s announcement today to allow the deferral of sales tax payments to local jurisdictions will provide needed relief to small businesses and protect workers, as a former mayor, we know the Governor understands the essential local services these resources are used to fund in our communities,” said Carolyn Coleman, executive director, League of California Cities. “These resources pay for the firefighters, police officers, code enforcement officers, and others who are working around the clock to protect Californians during this pandemic. We are confident that the Governor and the Legislature will partner with local governments to ensure they have the resources necessary for these local heroes to continue to deliver vital services in the difficult weeks and months ahead.”

Established in 1898, the League of California Cities is a nonprofit statewide association that advocates for cities with the state and federal governments and provides education and training services to elected and appointed city officials.
