Message from Cal Cities Executive Director Carolyn Coleman

January 6, 2021

Dear California City Leaders,

Welcome to 2021! I hope everyone had safe and restful holidays.

This year, under the leadership of Cal Cities President Cheryl Viegas Walker, we will continue our focus on ensuring California cities have the resources to respond to the ongoing impacts of the pandemic and to recover. Your engagement in Cal Cities advocacy, policy committee meetings, educational opportunities, and more will remain a key asset as we help local leaders address the challenges and issues facing California cities.

To begin the year, I am pleased to share with you the 2020 Cal Cities Annual Report, which captures in writing, in pictures, and by the numbers, our collective achievements in support of California cities in 2020.

With the holidays now behind us, I want you to know that Cal Cities is prepared to hit the ground running to advance our 2021 Strategic Advocacy Priorities when Gov. Gavin Newsom introduces his FY 2021-22 State Budget proposal later this week and when the state Legislature reconvenes next week on Jan. 11.

Another key component to advancing our strategic advocacy priorities is our Cal Cities policy committees, which will convene virtually for their first meetings of the year on Jan. 14-15. Over 400 committee members strong, the work of our policy committees is invaluable and directly connected to Cal Cities’ core mission of advocating for the common interests of cities. Following the committees’ deliberations, the Cal Cities board will consider the committees’ recommendations during its February meeting.

Finally, let me take this opportunity to congratulate all of the recently elected city officials. Cal Cities is excited to support you as a leader in your community. If you haven’t registered already, I encourage you to sign up now for the Cal Cities New Mayors and Council Members Academy, which will be held virtually over several days, Jan. 21, 22, 28, and 29. The academy is a must-attend for newly elected officials who want to learn the fundamentals of being an effective local elected official and connect with peers from your community and across the state. Returning elected officials are welcome to attend the academy too!

Thank you for leading, and know that I look forward to all we will accomplish together in 2021.

Stronger together,

Carolyn M. Coleman
