Dear California City Leaders,
With just six days until the election, I know many of you and your colleagues are in the middle of reelection campaigns and working hard to get those you support elected at the local, state, and federal levels. You may also be engaged in campaigns for and against local and state ballot measures that will impact your communities. Public service at the local level is an honor and incredibly hard work, so I applaud all who are committed to serving their communities.
I also want to recognize your efforts to get out the vote in your communities. Voting is one of the most important things that Americans can do, and it gives us all a voice and the power to shape policy at the local, statewide, and federal level.
As you are working around the clock to ensure safe elections, protect your communities, and kick start your local economies, the League is here to support you. However, you also need a strong federal partner to support you. Cities have gone for too long during the course of this pandemic without federal resources to match the scope and the scale of the crisis.
We know the herculean efforts you are making - pre, during, and post-election - to continue to provide services to your residents. That’s why the League will continue to call on House and Senate members to set aside partisan politics and continue negotiations towards a new stimulus package that provides fiscal assistance to cities. For sure, hard things are hard, but that’s no reason to walk away from the opportunity to do what’s right for local communities. You have stepped up, and now we need Washington to do the same. Our residents are depending on it.
Thank you to all of the city officials for your leadership during these unprecedented and challenging times. We are stronger together, and we will get through this, together.
Be safe and stay healthy.
Carolyn M. Coleman
