More Than 400 City Officials descended on Sacramento for Newly Elected Mayors and Council Members Academy and Policy Committee Meetings

League Officers Meet with Legislative Leaders and Staff to Discuss City Priorities in 2020

January 29, 2020
The League of California Cities welcomed more than 160 newly elected city officials to Sacramento Jan. 22-24 for the New Mayors and Council Members Academy, the first event in a lineup of comprehensive and valuable educational programs for city officials throughout 2020.

During the three-day event city officials received a treasure trove of information and tools to help them govern even more effectively in their community. The academy sessions included a briefing on top priorities facing California cities in 2020 and the importance of working closely with legislators to advance local priorities.

Sessions included how to run effective and respectful council meetings, foster community and staff relationships, local government finance, legal responsibilities and obligations, land use policy, and state-required AB 1234 ethics and AB 1661 harassment prevention trainings.

League President John F. Dunbar and League Executive Director Carolyn Coleman thanked the mayors and council members for their commitment to serving their constituents and shared how engaging with the League can help them be stronger advocates for their communities, as well as unite and amplify California cities’ voices in Sacramento.

The event wrapped up on Friday with a session on the 2020 Census and how it will play a critical role in how the Redistricting Commission will redraw legislative district lines in 2022.

League Officers Attend Meetings in the Capitol

On Jan. 22, League leadership, including President Dunbar, Second Vice President Cindy Silva, Immediate Past President Jan Arbuckle, Executive Director Coleman, and Deputy Executive Director Melanie Perron met with the legislators and their senior staff to discuss the League’s 2020 strategic priorities and the legislators’ policy agendas for the year.

League Policy Committees Hold First Meetings of 2020

The League’s seven standing policy committees held their first meetings of the year in Sacramento last week. More than 400 city officials serve on these committees. League policy committees meet at least three times annually, with some committees meeting during the annual conference to review proposed resolutions for the General Assembly.

Both days began with legislative briefings before the individual committees took up their agenda items for discussion. The briefings included a welcome from League President Dunbar and Executive Director Coleman, followed by a legislative and state budget update by the League’s legislative representatives.

Actions taken by policy committees this week will next go to the League board of directors for review and action. Agendas are available on the League website.

News of last week’s events were posted “as it happened” on the League’s Twitter and Facebook feeds, but keep an eye on Facebook as there are more photos to come!
