November is Transgender Awareness Month

November 12, 2019
November is the time to celebrate transgender and gender nonconforming communities and raise awareness for the community through education and advocacy activities.

This year, there will be vigils and other gatherings around the country. Transgender Day of Remembrance on Nov. 20 is an important day within Transgender Awareness Month, memorializing those who have lost their lives as a result of transphobia.

West Hollywood and San Francisco are among the many cities celebrating Transgender Awareness Month. San Francisco began the month by lighting up City Hall with the transgender flag colors and both cities are flying the transgender flag over their respective city hall buildings.

The League of California Cities LGBTQ Caucus has created a practical guidebook, Transgender in the Workplace: A Guide for Municipalities, that provides city officials and city staff the latest and most up-to-date information related to transgender and gender non-conforming municipal employees. Download this important resource to learn best practices related to new state laws, policies and practices that promote inclusive workplaces.
