Hundreds of Newly Elected City Officials in Sacramento this week for Training and Policy Committee Meetings

January 14, 2019
The League of California Cities® will welcome hundreds of California city officials to Sacramento this week for newly elected officials training, policy committee meetings, and meetings with legislative leadership.
The New Mayors and Council Members Academy, Jan. 16–18, will bring together newly elected city officials from across the state and provide a toolkit of skills to govern effectively, plan for their city’s future, manage funds, and foster community and staff relationships. Sessions will focus on governance, municipal finance, land use policy, advocacy on city issues, communications and civic engagement.
The New Mayors and Council Members Academy will also take place in Irvine on Jan. 30 – Feb. 1. 2019 is the first time the League has offered this premier Academy at multiple locations, and both locations quickly sold out.
The League’s seven policy committees will also be in Sacramento holding their first meetings of the year. In these meetings, committee members comprising local officials from every corner of the state, will learn about key policy issues affecting California communities and make recommendations to the League Board of Directors on policy positions, which will serve as the foundation for the League’s advocacy efforts at the Capitol.
This year, a wide range of topics will be on the committees’ agenda, including public safety, retirement system sustainability, disaster planning and readiness funding, as well as housing production, affordability and homelessness resources and strategies.
