League of California Cities Supports Proposal to Invest in Affordable Housing and Local Communities

League joins broad coalition of labor representatives and housing organizations to support The Affordable Housing and Neighborhood Revitalization Act

SACRAMENTO — The League of California Cities® announces its support for The Affordable Housing and Neighborhood Act (SB 5). Authored by Sens. Jim Beall and Mike McGuire, SB 5 incentivizes cities throughout California to find innovative solutions that address the housing crisis while also supporting other state policy objectives. The League commends the bill’s authors who recognize the diversity of California cities and flexibility needed in addressing the housing supply and affordability challenges gripping many regions of the state. The League is joined by Housing California, State Building and Construction Trades Council, AFL-CIO, and CA Conference of Carpenters in support of the measure.

“The League of California Cities applauds Senator Beall and Senator McGuire’s leadership in the effort to restore a more robust tax increment financing tool that cities have lacked since the elimination of redevelopment. This effort will help restore and make available resources to communities to help build transit-oriented development, affordable housing, repair infrastructure and revitalize our neighborhoods and downtowns,” remarked Carolyn Coleman, executive director, League of California Cities.

SB 5 is also consistent with the League’s 2019 strategic goals, which its board approved at its meeting last week. For more information on the League’s 2019 strategic goals, visit www.cacities.org/2019StrategicGoals.

Established in 1898, the League of California Cities is a nonprofit statewide association that advocates for cities with the state and federal governments and provides education and training services to elected and appointed city officials.
