League of California Cities Congratulates Sen. Kevin de León on his Election as Senate President Pro Tempore

Sacramento, CA Upon hearing of the election of Sen. Kevin de León as Senate President Pro Tempore, League President and San Francisco Treasurer José Cisneros issued the following statement:

“The League of California Cities congratulates Sen. Kevin de León on his election today. His long-standing commitment to advocating for California’s disadvantaged communities has been a key part of his track record of public service. The cities of California look forward to working with the state’s next President Pro Tempore on issues of importance to the vitality of cities.”

First elected to the Senate in 2010, Sen. de León previously served four years in the Assembly where he was chair of the Assembly Appropriations Committee. The senator previously worked as a community organizer, a public school advocate and as an English as a second language and U.S. citizenship teacher.

Among his many legislative accomplishments, while in the Assembly, Sen. de León authorized legislation to establish a needs-based competitive grants program for the distribution of $400 million in Proposition 84 funds for local park assistance and development. Signed into law in October 2008 by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the allocations in AB 31 provided the nation’s largest single investment in local parks and directed it to high need areas.

Established in 1898, the League of California Cities is a nonprofit statewide association that advocates for cities with the state and federal governments and provides education and training services to elected and appointed city officials.
