Gov. Jerry Brown announced on Tuesday, May 7 the appointment of Rolling Hills Estates Council Member Judy Mitchell to the California Air Resources Board. First elected to the Rolling Hills Estates City Council in 1999, Mitchell served as League president from 2008–2009.

Gov. Jerry Brown spent almost an hour talking with the League board of directors on April 25 about criminal justice realignment, local control, economic development, the roles of the various levels of government, his commitment to building new infrastructure in the state and his philosophy on government.

On March 5, the League sent mail ballots to all member cities on two proposed amendments to the League’s bylaws. Ballots must be submitted to the League by April 19.

The League of California Cities is now accepting nominations from elected officials interested in serving in one of six at-large board positions (two-year term), or as second vice president (one-year term). All nominees for second vice president must currently be serving or have previously served on the board of directors.

In November 2012, the League’s board of directors approved two proposed amendments to the League bylaws which must be approved by a two-thirds vote of those members voting in order to take effect.

Yesterday, the League Strategic Initiatives Task Force met for the first time at the League offices to consider a variety of policy and advocacy alternatives the organization could discuss with its membership over the next few months in order to secure a greater measure of home rule in the future.

During its meeting last week in Manhattan Beach, the League board of directors voted to refer five of the 11 initiatives that have qualified for the November statewide ballot to one or more policy committees for review during the League annual conference on Sept. 5 in San Diego.

Meeting in Manhattan Beach on July 20, the League board of directors unanimously authorized the commencement of litigation in the League's name on behalf of the cities of California to challenge the constitutional validity of AB 1484, the controversial state budget trailer bill that authorizes the state Department of Finance to "claw-back" city sales taxes and city property taxes to satisfy the state's funding demands imposed on legally separate redevelopment successor agencies by AB 1484. The authorization covered possible intervention in an action filed by member city/cities or successor agency/agencies or the filing of a separate legal action.

At its meeting in Manhattan Beach today, the board of directors of the League of California Cities adopted a resolution congratulating cities for their continued faithful compliance with the requirements of the Ralph M. Brown Act even though the Legislature has suspended several of its provisions for three years.
