USDA Offers Grants to Increase Economic Opportunity and Improve the Quality of Life in Rural Areas

August 22, 2014
The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced that it is seeking applications for grants that will be awarded to organizations to provide critical financial and technical assistance to recipients to develop and strengthen their capacity to carry out housing, community facilities and community and economic development projects.

Nearly $6 million will be available to qualified organizations under the Rural Community Development Initiative (RCDI).

Recipients must be non-profit organizations, low-income rural communities, or federally recognized tribes. Intermediary organizations are required to provide matching funds at least equal to the RCDI grant. The grants do not go directly to business recipients but rather through qualified intermediaries.

RCDI grants may be used for but are not limited to:
  • Training sub-grantees to conduct a program on home-ownership education;
  • Training sub- grantees to conduct a program for minority business entrepreneurs;
  • Providing technical assistance to sub-grantees on how to effectively prepare a strategic plan;
  • Provide technical assistance to sub-grantees on how to access alternative funding sources;
  • Building organizational capacity through board training;
  • Developing training tools, such as videos, workbooks, and reference guides to be used by the sub-grantee;
  • Providing technical assistance and training on how to develop successful child care facilities; and
  • Providing training on effective fundraising techniques.
The deadline for submitting RCDI applications is Nov. 12. Applications must be submitted to the USDA Rural Development state office. More information about the program and how to apply is available on page 47427 of the Aug. 13, 2014 Federal Register.
