Federal Update: Fiscal Cliff Take Two and Follow Up from the State of the Union

Sequestration Deadline Looming

February 22, 2013

Without congressional action, the across the board cuts required by sequestration will go into effect on Friday, March 1.  And so far, there is no deal in sight.

The president called on congress to act provided a plan to avoid the sequester and reduce the deficit with a more balanced approach.

The sequester was originally scheduled to become effective on Jan. 1, but was delayed with the passage of the American Taxpayer Relief Act.  For more information on sequestration, please visit the League’s federal webpage.

State of the Union – Infrastructure Proposals

During the State of the Union, the president announced two new programs to address the nation’s failing infrastructure. He pointed out that more than 200,000 miles of U.S. roads need repair right now and that thousands of bridges are structurally deficient. The Fix-It-First program will focus on repairing what we have, while the Partnership to Rebuild America program will attract private investment for public infrastructure.  This week the White House released a fact sheet with additional information on the programs.
