Department seeks second vice presidential candidates
The department is seeking members who are ready to take on a leadership role by serving as its next Second Vice President.
Interested members should fill out this application and return it to Meghan McKelvey no later than April 2.
Sixty day after the Planning Commissioners Academy, the Executive Committee will present a slate of candidates upon which members will vote.
Why should you throw your hat in the ring?
Being an Executive Officer will enable you to:
help set the course for the department’s future,
play a role in creating educational opportunities for your colleagues,
provide expert feedback for League staff on planning-related legislation,
participate in the formulation – then vote on – the League’s annual list of policy priorities
and increase your professional exposure.
Here’s some more important information about the position:
Who can be nominated: Second Vice Presidential nominees are chosen under a rotating system between Northern and Southern California cities and between planning commissioners and planning staff.
This year, the Department is seeking a planning staff member from Southern California.
Term of office: One year. Once in office, a Second Vice President has an opportunity to move up to First Vice President and then President, which would require a three-year commitment.
Other qualifications: The Second Vice President should also possess the ability and knowledge to perform the job, a record of participation in the Department, a demonstrated commitment to excellence and time to perform the duties of the office.
Responsibilities: The Second Vice President:
must attend all meetings, which include monthly conference calls and business meetings at the League’s Annual Convention and the Planning Commissioners Academy;
sits on the Planning Commissioners Academy Planning Committee, aiding in the development of educational sessions for colleagues from around the state;
sits on the Department’s Nominating Committee;
acts as a subject-matter expert, providing feedback to the League on planning-related policy matters;
serves as a League Leader during an annual meeting at which members vote on the League’s priorities for the following year;
fills in for the First Vice-President if he or she is unable to perform the duties of that office.

In addition to the annual Planning Commissioners Academy in February the Department appoints policy committee representatives, appoints city staff to state-wide working groups and committees, gets involved in legislation through the Department's Legislative Committee, publishes a quarterly newsletter, and provides stories for League publications like Western City Magazine.
